They also can be eaten on their own to heal 10 health over 5 seconds.

Locating

Apples spawn on apple trees. These trees are a lot smaller than the other ones so they are easy to spot.
Besides apples, apple trees can also have beehives. Beehives add Honey to your inventory upon picking them up.
